Product discovery is the process of validating that the right problem is understood before investing in a solution. It involves user research, stakeholder interviews, data analysis and rapid prototyping to answer: what problem are we solving, for whom, and does the proposed solution actually address it? Building without discovery is the leading cause of products that work technically but aren't used, they solve the wrong problem or the right problem in the wrong way.
A design system is a shared library of UI components, design tokens and usage guidelines that ensures consistency across all of an organization's products. Without one, every team rebuilds the same components differently, buttons, forms, tables, modals, creating inconsistent experience and wasted effort. A design system creates consistency, accelerates development and reduces accessibility debt by centralizing compliance in shared components.
WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) AA is the standard level of digital accessibility compliance, it defines requirements for color contrast, keyboard navigation, screen reader support and other aspects of accessible design. In many jurisdictions, digital accessibility is a legal requirement. Beyond legal risk, excluding users with disabilities means losing a significant share of potential users, accessibility improvements also typically improve usability for everyone.
The most common cause is building the wrong things correctly, solving technical problems instead of user problems, or solving the right problems in ways users don't understand or trust. Engineering investment improves reliability and performance, but NPS is driven by whether the product helps users achieve their goals efficiently. Products also fail when they're built for hypothetical users instead of real ones, skipping discovery and usability testing in favor of faster delivery.
It depends on scope. A discovery sprint takes 2 to 3 weeks and produces a validated roadmap. A proof of concept takes 4 to 8 weeks. A full scale project is ongoing. What matters is that each phase has clear success criteria defined before starting, so 'done' means something specific, not 'when time or budget runs out'.
